ACL V.S. UV Screen Printing

Author : Date : 11/21/2012 2:34:43 AM

There are many ways to decorate a glass bottle/jar: Paper Label, ACL (Applied Ceramic Labeling), AOL (Applied Organic Labeling) and UV Screen Printing.

Which one is the most reasonable solution for your bottle? It really depends on your requirements for it as each solution has its advantage and disadvantages.

Comparison Paper Label Decals ACL UV Ink
Cost Low High Medium Medium
High End Look Poor Poor Good Excellent
Water Resistance Poor Poor Excellent Good
Abrasion Resistance Poor Poor Excellent Good
Chemical Resistance Poor Poor Medium Excellent
Energy Cost Low Low High Low
Environmental Concerns None Recycling Problems VOC, Heavy Metals None

Paper Label

No doubt, is the most common way, especially for wine bottles, for its advantages as:
Label production cost is low;
Production rate is high, regarding the production of label itself or the labeling process;
Easy change-over;
However, after long time handling, label bubbling, wrinkling or torn label corners are unavoidable and affect the product appearance.

ACL (Applied Ceramic Labeling)

is an extremely durable application technique for glass containers only. ACL entails bonding ceramic inks and thermoplastic chemicals to a container's surface, producing designs that are resistant to chipping and flaking. There are, however, several legal and environmental restrictions on ACL's usage. CONEG, or the Conference of North-East Governors, and Proposition 65, prohibit the intentional use of bright colors (such as red, yellow, orange, and green) that contain heavy metals (such as lead, chromium, cadmium, and mercury). Furthermore, transparent colors are unavailable in Applied Ceramic Labeling.

AOL (Applied Organic Labeling)

is similar in many ways to Applied Ceramic Labeling and offers a wider range of color possibilities than ACL, including opaque and transparent colors that are unavailable in ACL. Since AOL utilizes only organic inks, an extensive variety of bright colors can be obtained without violating CONEG or Proposition 65 regulations.

Compared with Paper Label, ACL & AOL has below Advantages:

           Permanent adhesion

           No bubbling, wrinkling or torn label corners

           Scuff proof/Waterproof/Cellar proof

           No application issues at bottling

           No expensive change parts for uniquely shaped labels, or “two part label” applications

           360˚ design surface

           Vertical height surface 1/2” inch from base of bottle to shoulder

But UV Screen Printing can be even better!
Compared with ACL, UV system has more advantages includes:

           Brighter, stronger, vibrant colors and an unlimited color palette

           Bottles can be made lighter and thinner as they do not have to withstand the heating and cooling cycle.

           Heated screens and thermoplastic mediums are not required

 As there is no requirement for a Lehr or Kiln, there will be:

           Greatly reduced energy costs;

           A major saving in factory area.

           Decorating time reduced from up to 2 hours down to about 10 seconds;

           No volatiles emitted from the decorating medium.

           No requirement for a push bar stacker, transfer conveyors or accumulation table;

           No lehr or kiln maintenance programme or lehr/kiln spares costs;

           No time lost changing elements or re-setting burners;

           No time or energy wasted in waiting for a lehr or kiln to heat up from cold;

           No possibility of colour variation due to minor fluctuations in firing conditions or lehr/kiln atmosphere;

           Greatly reduced power supply installation.
